A Defining Moment for Broome; Wharf Floated into Position - July 2025

Over the weekend, the KMSB floating wharf was successfully floated into its final position,  a major milestone in the delivery of this transformative infrastructure for the Kimberley region. After more than eight years of vision and planning, and months of on-site execution, this achievement marks a turning point: the project is no longer just a concept — it’s real.

The float-in was a smooth, deliberate operation, carried out with precision and quiet confidence. It was more than a construction feat — it was the beginning of a new chapter for Broome’s port capabilities, unlocking 24/7, all-tide access to support regional growth and resilience.

We extend our thanks to the dedicated teams at KMSB, TAMS Group, Kimberley Ports Authority (KPA), and all our contractors, engineers, and stakeholders who helped bring this vision to life. With the core structure now in place, we’re on track for go-live in September 2025.

Restraint Structure and Bi-Directional Causeway – June 2025

Another milestone locked in!
We’ve successfully lifted the northern and southern restraint structure jackets onto their piles — a major step forward for the floating wharf installation.

These critical components anchor the wharf securely while allowing it to rise and fall with the tide, ensuring both stability and flexibility in dynamic marine conditions. Their safe placement marks a key achievement in the infrastructure rollout and reflects the precision and teamwork driving this project forward.

Floating Pontoon Arrival – May 2025

The arrival of the floating pontoon marked a major milestone in Broome’s marine infrastructure upgrades - and what a sight it was!

Delivered via semi-submersible vessel, the pontoon was carefully positioned within the Port of Broome, signalling real progress for KMSB and the broader region. This 11,500-tonne, 9,250m² floating wharf is engineered to operate 24/7, overcoming Broome’s extreme tidal variations and unlocking consistent marine access for vessels of all sizes. The northern and southern restraint jackets are next to be installed early next month

The new Port Terminal, with its feature - the floating wharf is primed to reshape logistics across Northern Australia. It’s more than infrastructure - it’s a strategic enabler for industries including minerals, energy, tourism, and agriculture.

Trestle Jetty Construction Update – April 2025

We’re pleased to share that construction of the trestle jetty is progressing steadily, with significant momentum gained in recent weeks.

The structure is now advancing at a rate of one bent every 3.5 days - a bent being the span between two sets of piles. This pace reflects the team’s efficiency and commitment to delivering high-quality marine infrastructure.

The team has reached bent 11 of 23, marking nearly the halfway point. This milestone is a testament to the collaborative effort and careful planning that continues to drive the project forward.

We’re proud to be delivering this work safely and ahead of schedule, and we look forward to sharing more updates as the jetty takes shape.

Floating Wharf Launch - January 2025

KMSB is thrilled to share the successful launch of our floating wharf from the overseas shipyard this month. This monumental achievement is a testament to the dedication, hard work, and unwavering commitment of our team, and our project partners.

This world class facility will significantly enhance our operational capabilities, providing unparalleled support to the maritime industry in our region and we’re looking forward to an exciting new chapter for Broome and the Kimberley.

Optimising marine logistics in the North West is closer than ever, with the wharf to be delivered to Broome subject to appropriate weather conditions.

Project Update - October 2024

Marine works at the Port of Broome will commence in November 2024 in preparation for the key construction period of the Kimberley Marine
Support Base Facility. Contractors are currently mobilising on site, and low-level activity may be seen ahead of construction.

When marine works commence in November, there will be a temporary “Marine Works Zone” as indicated below.

Unauthorised personnel and vessels are NOT permitted within 50m of the marine works zone. Special navigation markers (yellow crosses and lights) will indicate the work zones to avoid. Foot traffic along the beach will be permitted when active work zones are a safe distance away.

Please note the Kimberley Ports Authority (KPA) are also completing road upgrades in the area (indicated in blue on the map) from mid/late October.

Construction of the KMSB facility is expected to be complete in the second half of 2025.

Thank you for your patience and understanding of potential road and marine access interruptions during this time.
